Art for the garden and interior

An inspiring exhibition at a rural Yorkshire Gallery will show that art doesn’t need to be restricted your home’s interior. This year’s Summer Show at The Lund Gallery, nr Easingwold, in North Yorkshire will feature a selection of art for both the garden and interior, with work by some of the UK’s top makers.
With contemporary crafts becoming very collectable and style gurus telling us that work by original makers is the latest trend, it’s the ideal opportunity to pay a visit this contemporary rural gallery.

The Summer Show previews on the weekend of the 5th & 6th July, with live jazz and demonstrations and runs until the 31st of August.

One of the highlights of the show will be a major selection of work by Celia Smith, who’s inspiration for her beautiful wire sculptures is largely found in birds. Celia captures the form, movement and character using steel and wire as a tool to give the birds life and energy. Her pieces also have recycled elements to them as many of the materials are sourced from scrap yards, something satisfying for the artist as she is giving new life to redundant materials. who creates expressive wire bird sculptures.

Debbie Loane, owner of The Lund gallery comments:
“I am very excited to be hosting the summer exhibition this year which is playing host to some of the UK’s finest makers and painters. I am delighted that Celia Smith will be coming back to the gallery for her first major showing. Celia has been showing her wire sculptures of  British birds at the Lund Gallery since we opened in 2005 and the work has been growing steadily in popularity. She had a sell out exhibition at Origin in London in 2007 and a recent feature in Country Living has left us inundated with enquiries about her work. The show will feature both indoor and outdoor pieces from large roosters and groups of geese to small studies.”

Celia gains inspiration from time she spends “Studying and drawing the birds that I make. Some of my sculptures are commissioned for a special space of the environment. Other pieces are created as a result of me being captivated by seeing a particular sight”

Debbie Loane has selected painters Peter Joyce from Dorset and Sarah Carrington from Edinburgh who present very different paintings on a coastal theme. Sarah paints the west coast of Scotland while Peter Joyce works in an abstract way depicting journeys along the coast of Dorset and France.

Debbie says:
“There is also a strong feeling of that unique British coastal light within the work of the two main painters taking part in the summer exhibition. Edinburgh painter, Sarah Carrington, produces lyrical and glowing pieces which literally sparkle with light and life. Sarah, who works mainly on the West coast of Scotland, took part in the opening exhibition at Lund Gallery in 2005 and her work went down really well. I am delighted that we can welcome her back with a larger body of work this time.”

“In contrast to Sarah’s figurative works Peter Joyce creates abstracted images which are particularly resonant of the South coast, in particular Dorset. Both painters seem to be successful in capturing in their own individual ways the essence and light of the landscape in which they choose to work.”

“To compliment these paintings I have asked the York based potter Peter Humpherson to show a collection of his beautifully glazed bowls which are all based on the Ardnamurchan coast. “

Devon based potter Tim Andrews will be showing his work for the first time at the gallery, his work is widely exhibited across the UK and he has gained an International reputation for his distinctive smoke-fired and raku ceramics which have been acquired for both public and private collections.

Within the gallery garden Dales based sculptor Sarah Smith will show a series of pieces. Sarah works mainly in the materials that surround her - whether that is the sand and limestone from her home in Yorkshire or the marble and alabaster when she travels to Italy. Her work has captured the interest of The Duke of Devonshire, where it is displayed in a sculpture trail at the Bolton Abbey estate.

The Summer Show previews on the weekend of 5th & 6th July, with live jazz and demonstrations and runs until the 31st of August. Gallery opening hours during exhibitions are Thursday to Saturday 11-5pm and Sundays and Bank Holidays 12- 4pm
