Culture, breathtaking views and more….

What free event combines culture, breathtaking views and a chance to hone your navigation skills? Answer – the 2009 North Yorkshire Open Studios… which this year promises to be even better than ever with over 100 artists taking part in one of the country’s largest open studio events running across the last two weekends in June, Sat 20 & Sun 21 and Friday to Sunday 26/27/28.

Artists and makers across the region will invite you into a host of intriguing studio spaces – which range from caravans on the North Yorkshire Moors, harbourside baiting sheds in Scarborough, suburban living rooms in historic Harrogate and beautiful back gardens in the remote Yorkshire Dales…

With works on show ranging from stained glass, knitted jewellery and miniature paper shoes to sculpture, paintings and pottery … and styles ranging from contemporary to traditional to quirky there really will be something to inspire everybody.

This is a great opportunity to buy or commission works for you, your home, or your garden as well as to discover the rich seam of culture that runs throughout North Yorkshire’s breathtaking landscape.

Scarborough, now home to a growing number of creatives, is worth adding to the route of studios to visit, including that of Dawn Brooks, a young printmaker whose strong images are inspired by the industrial landscape of the North East and Tracey Himsworth, who produces work from the materials she gathers which are often unwanted discarded objects such as industrial and agricultural machinery. On the nearby harbourside Kane Cunningham and Andrew Cheetham are working from baiting shed studios documenting the local fishing industry, whilst in nearby Cloughton, farmers wife Sarah Venus is producing abstract felt sculptures...

This is the first year that Selby based sculptor Eoghan Bridges has been part of the Open Studios.  Since holding his first exhibition in 1987, which won the critical acclaim of art critic, Brian Sewell he has had many exhibitions, selling work throughout the world which explore the relationship between horse and rider and creating provoking compositional harmonies and tensions.

Christine Keogh, Director of Art Connections, who organise the event comments
“This is the fifth year of North Yorkshire Open Studios and this year we have developed many additional ways for people to participate in the programme. As well as visiting the artists’ studios, there will be a series of artists’ talks, practical workshops, exhibitions and demonstrations taking place right across North Yorkshire. Info is also available on the Art Connections website: www.artconnections.org.uk”

The event is spread over two weekends on Sat 20 & Sun 21 June and Friday to Sunday 26/27/28 June, with studios opening from 10.30am to 5.30pm. There is no entry fee to any of the studios which are grouped geographically into the Dales, Central area of North Yorkshire and the Moors and Coast.
